The introduction of the nuclear bomb was the most significant technological advancement during the second world war period. It had the biggest impact in terms of warfare due to the massive devastation it created for the people of Japan. It was much more significant than any other advancements as it also ended the war in the far east. It was the cause of the Japanese surrender but also proved to the rest of the world the extreme military power and control of the United States. If those bombs had not been dropped it could be argued that the war may not have been over as quickly, and that more lives may have been sacrificed. To this day the destruction the bomb had caused is still felt and acknowledged. Without this advancement in technology the war would have lasted much longer as the damage other weaponry were capable of would not be sufficient to cause strong willed countries such as Japan to surrender.

In my opinion, the Battle of Stalingrad was the most significant turning point for the Allies in WWII. The soviets began to believe in themselves after 91,000 German troops were taken prisoners. As soon as Germany was defeated and no longer had the manpower to cope with the Russians due to their loss of men, resources, food and equipment, the Allies got stronger. It gave them the hope and motivation to keep fighting, knowning that they had a chance of defeating the Germans once and for all. In the incident of Germany winning this battle, they would have been able to mobilize troops over in Russia which would have made them much stronger than they already were. If they were not defeated by that time they quickly would have advanced and taken over all of Europe. The Battler of Stalingrad prevented this from happening because it weakened and knocked down Germany, built up the Allies which resulted in various other turning points following this specific battle. Therefor, the German defeat at Stalingrad was the most important turning point for the Allies in WWII. It ensured that the Allies were strong enough to fight back and help other countries gain back their power to fight off Germany. What Winston Churchill means by his quote "Wars are not won on evacuations" is that you cannot win a war properly without determination, sacrifice, endurance and perseverance. By running away from the enemy you are prolonging the consequences of future attack resulting in the reality of winning or losing. At the Battle of Dunkirk when the British and French troops were both surrounded by the Germans the British navy ordered an evacuation for all British troops and many French troops to be evacuated as quickly as possible. While evacuation seemed like the right thing to do it was not the right solution needed to win and finally finish the war. It is important to fight and not run but British civilians with boats were asked to help out this task due to the sheer number of stranded soldiers. The Germans had an opportunity to attack the evacuating soldiers and innocent civilians but strange reasons prevented them from attacking. And as a result the Battle of Dunkirk was seen as a small allied victory.
The movie Saving Private Ryan begins with an old man visiting a cemetery with his family on a beautiful day, where there were thousands of white crosses. It is unclear who this old man is in the movie until there is a flash back to the the beaches of Normandy during the Allied invasion on June 6th 1944. Under Cpt. Miller, soldiers fight to secure the beachhead.
In this battle, two brothers with the last name Ryan are killed. They find out there were two more brothers, although the third one was killed in action, the last brother standing, Private Jame Ryan is a subjective target for Cpt. Miller and his team to find. Mrs. Ryan was supposed to receive all three of the grave telegrams on the same day. The US Army Cheif of Staff goes to her house and tells her about her three dead sons, the proceeds to tell her that one is still alive but that they are going to send out a search mission to bring him home. Cpt. Millers team consists of 8 men and select members from 2nd Rangers. They go through grueling and treacherous measures to complete their mission to find Private Ryan, but on the way loose their medic. Once they finally find him, he refuses to go home, despite the news of his dead brothers. He does not wish to leave his new brothers at that point in time or see why he deserves to go home and no one else does. Cpt. Miller and his team stay with Private Ryan to help the remainder of his men at the camp, to set up traps in order to fight the Germans. Cpt. Miller will not let Ryan die, so he keeps him by his side until the very end of the fight. They are victorious with the help of sudden fighter jets. In the end, Cpt. Miller ends up dying so that Ryan can live to go home to his mother. Private James Ryan is the old man standing at Cpt. Miller's grave from the beginning of the movie. |
