The movie Saving Private Ryan begins with an old man visiting a cemetery with his family on a beautiful day, where there were thousands of white crosses. It is unclear who this old man is in the movie until there is a flash back to the the beaches of Normandy during the Allied invasion on June 6th 1944. Under Cpt. Miller, soldiers fight to secure the beachhead.
In this battle, two brothers with the last name Ryan are killed. They find out there were two more brothers, although the third one was killed in action, the last brother standing, Private Jame Ryan is a subjective target for Cpt. Miller and his team to find. Mrs. Ryan was supposed to receive all three of the grave telegrams on the same day. The US Army Cheif of Staff goes to her house and tells her about her three dead sons, the proceeds to tell her that one is still alive but that they are going to send out a search mission to bring him home. Cpt. Millers team consists of 8 men and select members from 2nd Rangers. They go through grueling and treacherous measures to complete their mission to find Private Ryan, but on the way loose their medic. Once they finally find him, he refuses to go home, despite the news of his dead brothers. He does not wish to leave his new brothers at that point in time or see why he deserves to go home and no one else does. Cpt. Miller and his team stay with Private Ryan to help the remainder of his men at the camp, to set up traps in order to fight the Germans. Cpt. Miller will not let Ryan die, so he keeps him by his side until the very end of the fight. They are victorious with the help of sudden fighter jets. In the end, Cpt. Miller ends up dying so that Ryan can live to go home to his mother. Private James Ryan is the old man standing at Cpt. Miller's grave from the beginning of the movie.
