-Kellogg- Briand Pact (peace deal with France saying they wouldn't use war to solve future problems.) 1928. -Remains out of World affairs and the League of Nations -Republican attitude -The Republican Presidents -Republican Era -"Return to Normalcy" -U.S. felt they were superior to a corrupt world. -U.S. impregnable The US policy of non participation in international economic and political affairs. The main reason the US did not join the league of nations. Idea of Isolationism in the 30's: Limited immigration remained (closed the doors to particular immigrants from Japan, China and India.) (It would have taken employment opportunities away from Americans.) High tariffs Does not guarantee any European agreements (America feels she is a peace loving nation, unlike those Europe nations. 1933 USA formally recognizes Stalin's Russia (soviet union.) Odd because the US fears communism because it makes everyone equal. Also feared the rise of Nazi's. Fascism came into play as something much worse, so the US needed Russia as an ally to offset the rise of Hitler. Link: https://history.state.gov/milestones/1937-1945/american-isolationism |
